Leatherhead & District Local History Society - Our Streets and Roads

Leatherhead High Street (previously Great Queen Street)

These days most people have a mobile phone. Increasingly these phones have a decent camera built-in. Handy digital cameras are also quite common.
So many of us are quickly able to take photos of things that contribute to the history of where we live.

For example you notice that some change may be made or just feel that it would be a good idea to record things as they are now.

The aim of this project is to build up an on-line record of where we live. Then we can eventually have a visual record of change, and where better to view it than on the Internet?

How you could take part in this project

Each photo should ideally be of a large rather than a small or medium file size. We can reduce the file size for the web and use the original to add the the archives of the Society.

If necessary take an additional photo to provide the context.  Better photos of the same place are also welcome.
Of course, please be careful when taking photos!

Or if you are not able to provide an image, let us know what you have spotted.

Please email your photos to the editor of this page, Frank Haslam, stating when and precisely where you took each one, and any comment.

Copyright of the images remains with the providers. If you wish to make use of the images please contact us first.

Kelly's 1950 Directory of Dorking, Leatherhead, Ashtead and Neighbourhood comprised 'street sections, private residents sections, commercial sections, neighbourhood sections, trades section and official information'.

Kelly's were established 1799 and claimed to be the oldest and largest directory publishers in the world. The 1950 edition, on loan to the editor by Mr Terry Millward, cost 7s 6d.

Because the High Street has changed so much, at the moment it seems practical to list it first as it was in 1950.

Please bear in mind that in the Kelly's listing below the numbering has changed and watch out for name order eg Burton Montague Ltd is Montague Burton Ltd (aka Burtons the Tailors: the stone plaque commemorating the opening of this branch can be seen at Leatherhead Museum).

Kings Head Alley
September 2016

between no.24 and no.26 High Street

25/2/2005 GetSurrey: Two of Leatherhead’s dingy alleys have been brighten up with new entrance arches specially designed to reflect their history.

Kings Head Alley and Neate’s Alley are two long established pedestrian routes in the town that have been provided with arches made nearby by the Fire and Iron Gallery and partly designed by local schoolchildren.

King’s Head Alley takes its name from an inn that once stood on the site and was supposed to always have a table reserved especially for members of the clergy. This is reflected in the design of the entrance arch which features churchwardens’ pipes and ale tankards.

Neate’s Alley takes its name from a 19th century family of grocers and butchers. Pigs were slaughtered in a yard at the back of the shop which gave it its old name of dog. Dogs were said to be attracted there in the hope of getting some scraps. The design of the arch incorporates different kinds of dogs and a pig. The frames of both arches are a tangle of stems and leaves.

Fire and Iron Gallery spokesman, Lucy Quinnell, said: “Our research of the histories of the alleys proved very enlightening and enabled us to suggest features that might be incorporated into the design of the new arches. “Pupils and Woodville and Therfield schools helped us design some of the elements of each arch. They are colourful, quirky, educational and fun.”

The schemes have been paid for by contributions from local developers and are part of the project to rejuvenate the town centre. Improved lighting is to be installed shortly.
