Vardey (1988) on North Street

On the west side of North Street was the Lion Brewery referred to in Thomas Cooper's will of 1799. It was a freehold dwelling with malt house and brewery, seven store cellars, cooperage, three stables and a millhouse, outbuildings, a large garden and eight tenements, yard and paddock. Thomas Cooper was also proprietor of the 'Rising Sun', Fetcham where he began his successful trade 'brewing six-penny beer made from fine spring water'.

It is thought that on an island site next to the Stocks House was the Market House, part of the Leatherhead market place. Elias Allen's survey of 1629 shows a large building on the site and John Aubrey writing in his diary in 1673 records it being in the town in 1623. It may well account for the strange alignment of the old crossroads. By 1782, it had disappeared and was not shown on the Gwilt map.

Shop, now office. Mid to later C19; altered. Roughcast render painted white, slate roof. Double-depth plan with long rear extension. Two low storeys and 2+1 bays (the 3rd bay, which has a roof of lower pitch, apparently of a different build). The principal feature of interest is the ground floor shop front under a prominent canopy: this has a tripartite shop window and a doorway to the right, with fluted Tuscan semi-columns on panelled plinths, framing a wide centre and narrower side windows, all these windows under semi-elliptical fanlights with radiating leaded glazing and the doorway with a rectangular panel above; attached to the entablature of each column is a very prominent ornamental cast-iron bracket supporting the canopy, which has ornamental cresting over a modern fascia board. The 1st floor has 4-pane sashed windows furnished with blind-boxes.

Chimney stack on slope of roof at left end. Interior altered.

Leatherhead Congregational Church
1905

Vardey (1988): The first Congregational Church in Leatherhead opened in 1816 in a barn in the centre of the town, formerly used by strolling players. The church became fully active in 1829 and by 1844 a new church had been built in North Street capable of seating 250. This can be seen in this 1905 view of North Street.

The church is next to the large butcher's premises of 'Hartshorn, late Brown & Mercer, Purveyor to the Duke of Connaught': it was also a slaughterhouse.

By 1930 the church building had become very dilapidated and rats ran over the back pews during evening service. It was decided to move and in 1934 the site was sold to the Guildford & District Industrial Cooperative Society.

North Street
was near junction of Gravel Hill and North Street

Clock Tower

demolished 1952

Vardey (1988): Old photographs of Leatherhead show a clock tower at the junction of Gravel Hill and North Street.

Built in 1860 to house the town's fire engine, the clock itself was given to the town by the old Congregational Church, once in North Street, because it could not afford to pay the tax imposed on public clocks.

Near this site, a Stocks House stood in the middle of North Street and appears on a 1629 map and 1782/1793 town plan by Gwilt. From an old drawing, stocks can be seen outside so it was probably used to house offenders.

A new building (1983) close to the site, has been given its name [see 9 North Street].

In WWI the first World War the Clock Tower was the site of the Leatherhead War Shrine (also known as the Ladies' War Shrine).

This was an oak triptych bearing on the centre panel a cross underneath the arms of which are recorded the names of the Letherhead men who gave their lives in the Great War, and on the side panels the names of all who served in it.

It was placed in North Street in 1916 by the following ladies: Miss Atkins, Miss A. Brown, Mrs. Finké, Miss O. Finké, Mrs. Leach, Miss M. E. Leach, Mrs. Still, Miss M. Still and Miss G. Wanklyn, These ladies also undertook the care of it and the keeping of the records up to date, Miss G. Wanklyn acting as Secretary.

It was dedicated by the Bishop of Winchester on March 21st, 1917.

After the dedication of the permanent War Memorial on April 3rd, 1921, the Shrine was removed and renovated. By the desire of the donors, and with the consent of all the various authorities concerned it was placed in the Parish Church, and a flag to surmount it was given by the same ladies, Mrs. Clark-Kennedy taking the place of her mother Mrs. Finké.
